Welcome to Fall season! In Vermont there is so much to be inspired by. Local farm stands can be found all over the state and foliage colors spark childlike play. I was driving with no purpose when I passed a farm stand with lingering rows of dahlias.
The Adams Apple Orchard and Farm Stand is located in Williston and a great stop if you’re looking for a destination to explore the foliage. It has beautiful views of Camels Hump and lots of pumpkins to choose from. The pumpkins and flowers gave me the inspiration to create a pumpkin centerpiece and table decoration.
The following week I purchased a small pumpkin and few gourds, along with a bouquet of local flowers.
Below is a list of suggested materials to use for your own pumpkin centerpiece. Have fun, and reach out if you have any questions.
Materials
- Flowers I suggest to buy a bouquet with a selection of large focal flowers such a
s dahlia and sunflower and then forage for greenery and wildflowers. I found flowers and greens in my front yard. If you have access to hydrangea, it’s a beautiful color this time of year.
- Greenery
- Large blooms
- small wildflower type blooms
- Flower clippers or scissors
- 1 small pumpkin
- Pumpkin carving knife and scooper
- Plastic bag for seeds
- Mason jar and water
- Small gourds
Steps
- Gather all of your supplies and bring to a table
- Cut a large circle on top of the pumpkin around the stem. Make sure it’s larger than the width of the mason jar
- Scoop out inner guts and seeds
- Place mason jar inside and it’s easiest to arrange the flowers with the pumpkin elevated on a box or container
- Lay out your larger flowers to visualize what you have to work with and keep wildflowers and greenery in a vase to the side.
- Start placing your greenery around in all four directions. Trim the stem to the length you’d prefer and trim more if you need. I like to use the greenery to help cover the opening of the pumpkin and act as a foundation for the rest of the arrangement.
- Place fuller flowers such as hydrangea around the vase. It’s ok to keep some of the flowers low to the base of the vase.
- Add wildflowers and focal flowers in various heights and placements around the vase. Be sure to stand back and keep the arrangement looking balanced on all sides.
- Add lighter elements to delicately float above the rest
- Take out the mason jar every day to refill the water. Let the water overflow out of the jar while under the faucet for a minute to get fresh water in.
